CMP (Consent Management Platform)

A consent management platform (CMP) is software that presents choices about specified data uses and records related preference signals. Its functions can include a notice interface, preference storage, and integrations with other systems; the platform itself does not establish that a consent request is valid.

Also known as CMP, consent platform.

Why it matters in practice

Organizations may use a CMP to make privacy choices consistent across digital experiences and to communicate those choices to connected technologies. Configuration, language, and downstream behavior matter as much as the interface. Teams should distinguish a recorded preference from the legal basis or permission required for a particular processing activity.

Example

A site displays separate optional categories, saves a visitor’s selection, and passes the selected state to its tag controls.
