Customer Data Rights

Customer data rights are the choices or legal rights people may have over information associated with them. Depending on the framework and context, these can include access, correction, deletion, portability, objection, or withdrawal of a preference.

Also known as consumer data rights.

Why it matters in practice

A rights request usually requires an organization to identify the person and information involved, route the request, assess exceptions, and record a response. The available rights are not identical across laws or data types. Clear procedures help operational teams handle requests without treating this umbrella term as a universal entitlement.

Example

A service receives a request to access account information, verifies the requester through its established process, and routes the request to the records owner.

This definition is general information, not legal advice. It may omit facts that matter to a specific situation and does not establish or guarantee compliance.
