AI Act High-Risk Systems

An AI Act high-risk system is an artificial intelligence system that falls within a high-risk category under the European Union Artificial Intelligence Act. The classification is based on the system’s intended purpose and the applicable legal criteria, rather than on a general label about how advanced a model is.

Also known as high-risk AI system.

Why it matters in practice

The label matters because the Act associates different governance duties with different system categories. Classification therefore starts with a concrete description of intended use and the relevant provisions, then receives appropriate legal and technical review. This glossary does not determine whether any particular system is covered or satisfies a requirement.

Example

A team evaluates a proposed decision-support use against the Act’s classification rules instead of assuming the same model has one risk category in every context.

This definition is general information, not legal advice. It may omit facts that matter to a specific situation and does not establish or guarantee compliance.
