Proxy & networking

Static IP address

A static IP address is an address intended to remain assigned to a network interface or service over time rather than changing with each connection or lease. The assignment and continuity depend on the provider and network configuration.

Also known as fixed IP address.

Why it matters in practice

A stable address can simplify allowlists and operational references, but it does not encrypt traffic, authenticate a client, or identify a human user. A proxy’s listener address and its egress address may be different. Teams should confirm which address is stable and how reassignment is handled.

Example

An administrator records the proxy’s documented egress IP for an upstream allowlist and separately records the inbound listener address.
