Proxy & networking

Proxy IP

A proxy IP is an IP address assigned to or used to reach a proxy listener. It is distinct from the client’s source IP and may also differ from the egress IP that a destination sees when the proxy makes an upstream connection.

Also known as proxy address.

Why it matters in practice

The same proxy can have separate inbound and outbound network identities depending on its deployment. Logs may record client addresses, proxy listener addresses, and upstream addresses for different purposes. An IP address alone does not identify a person, authenticate a request, or prove that traffic came from a particular application.

Example

An access record shows a client IP connecting to the proxy, while a destination observes the proxy’s separate egress address.
