AI governance

NIST AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF)

The NIST AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF) is a voluntary resource from the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology for organizing AI risk management. It provides functions and guidance that organizations can adapt to their context rather than a certification or legal determination.

Also known as NIST AI RMF, AI RMF.

Why it matters in practice

The framework gives teams a shared vocabulary for governing, mapping, measuring, and managing AI risks. Its usefulness depends on applying the guidance to a defined system and documenting decisions. Adoption does not prove that a system is safe, compliant, or free from risk.

Example

A model team uses the framework’s functions to structure a review of intended use, evaluation evidence, and ongoing monitoring responsibilities.

Educational note

This definition is general information, not legal advice. It may omit facts that matter to a specific situation and does not establish or guarantee compliance.
