AI governance

AI Governance

AI governance is the organizational framework for making and overseeing decisions about artificial intelligence systems. It defines ownership, approval, risk review, documentation, monitoring, and change control so that responsibilities remain clear from initial design through operation and retirement.

Also known as artificial intelligence governance.

Why it matters in practice

A governance framework connects business purpose with technical controls and human oversight. Its policies should be translated into evidence that teams can use during reviews, incidents, and changes. The framework must fit the organization and system; adopting governance language does not make a model trustworthy or guarantee that every obligation is met.

Example

An organization records each model’s owner, intended use, review status, monitoring plan, and escalation contact in a maintained inventory.
