DNS over HTTPS (DoH)

DNS over HTTPS (DoH) carries DNS messages inside HTTPS requests between a client and a DoH resolver. Encryption protects that transport from passive observation on the intervening network, but the resolver still receives the DNS question and can apply its own logging or policy.

Also known as DoH.

Why it matters in practice

DoH can change which resolver handles a device’s lookups and may bypass network-level DNS controls if it is not managed. It is one encrypted DNS transport, not proof that every DNS lookup or subsequent connection is private. Resolver choice, endpoint configuration, and client policy remain important.

Example

A browser sends a DNS query for api.example.com to its configured DoH service over an HTTPS connection.
