Vendor Risk Assessment

A vendor risk assessment is a review of risks associated with a particular supplier and the services it provides. It considers relevant factors such as data access, security practices, operational dependency, and the organization’s ability to respond to a disruption.

Also known as supplier risk assessment.

Why it matters in practice

The depth of review should match the vendor relationship rather than rely on one questionnaire for every supplier. Evidence needs interpretation, and identified issues should have owners and decisions. Assessment is one part of managing a relationship across selection, use, change, and exit.

Example

A procurement reviewer compares a supplier’s security evidence with the data and system access requested for a proposed integration.
