Incident Response Plan

An incident response plan documents how an organization prepares for, detects, assesses, contains, and recovers from security or operational incidents. It identifies roles, decision paths, communications, and practical steps that responders can follow under pressure.

Also known as incident response procedure.

Why it matters in practice

Plans are useful only when they reflect real systems and people, and when exercises reveal unclear handoffs before an incident occurs. Response procedures often connect technical investigation with legal, privacy, customer, and leadership decisions. The plan should be reviewed as tools, dependencies, and responsibilities change.

Example

A tabletop exercise simulates suspicious outbound traffic and tests how an on-call engineer reaches the service owner and incident lead.
