Data plane

A data plane is the part of a system that processes application traffic or data operations according to configured behavior. In a proxy architecture, it typically handles client connections and forwards requests while the control plane manages policy and lifecycle.

Also known as traffic plane.

Why it matters in practice

Data-plane behavior determines what happens to live requests, so latency, capacity, failure handling, and security boundaries matter. The term does not specify a particular network product or guarantee isolation from management systems. Operators need to know which component sees plaintext, credentials, and connection metadata.

Example

A proxy’s data plane receives a client connection and applies the currently distributed routing behavior to the request.
