Control plane

A control plane is the part of a distributed system that manages configuration, coordination, and lifecycle decisions for other components. It may provision services, distribute policy, or report status, while data-processing components handle application traffic.

Also known as management plane.

Why it matters in practice

Separating management operations from request handling can clarify responsibilities and access boundaries. The distinction is architectural rather than absolute, and a control plane may still contain sensitive data or affect service availability. Teams should protect management interfaces and understand how configuration changes reach running components.

Example

An operator updates a proxy rule through a management API, and the control plane distributes that configuration to the relevant instance.
