Regulation & risk

Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA)

The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) is Australia’s independent prudential regulator for parts of the financial system, including banking, insurance, and superannuation. It supervises regulated institutions with a focus on their financial safety and stability.

Also known as APAC - APRA, APRA.

Why it matters in practice

APRA is an institution, not a privacy statute or a general label for every Australian regulator. Organizations use its materials to understand prudential expectations that apply to the entities and activities in scope. This entry describes the regulator’s basic identity and does not determine whether an organization is regulated.

Example

A financial organization checks whether its entity and activity fall within APRA’s remit before assigning an internal owner to review relevant supervisory material.
